A Writer’s Diet

In The Writing Diet, Julia Cameron draws our attention to an interesting phenomenon of how to unblock the wellspring of one’s creativity and how invigoration through work (writing for e.g.) can lead to a positive physical transformation, like weight loss!

So, much like food dieting practices, here are some of my thoughts on the pros and cons of writing regularly vs. binge writing. Famous writers suggest that one of the proven ways to be a productive writer is to schedule some writing time every day and stick to that schedule regularly. It helps to set a quantitative goal in mind such as 500-1000 words per day. Once this turns into a habit, the effort required to wake up every morning and push yourself to write becomes less painful. Some writers, however, feel that their best writing comes out when they binge write. In other words, deprive yourself of any form of writing for days, let the urge to write take over you completely, and then utilize that urge to your advantage by writing for 2-3 full days. Both types of writers claim to produce good results.

In my opinion, you need both. Becoming a good writer requires the intervention of the holy trinity: Patience, Practice, and Perseverance. A daily writing routine works wonders in accomplishing this. However, there is no doubt that some of the most inspired writing happens in long stretches. So, writing regularly does not imply that one is not allowed to binge. Using an eating analogy, to stay fit and healthy, regular, balanced meals are highly recommended. They keep our body’s metabolism and energy levels high while burning excess fat. This does not mean that you are curbing your hunger by eating small portions regularly. Neither does this mean that you are not allowed to occasionally skip a meal or two and pig out on some thing chocolatey, or fried (substitute with your favourite unhealthy dish) that provides a far more satisfying gustatory experience when compared to your regular diet.
